VMware has now publicly defended its quiet decision to remove downloads of the Virtual Disk Development Kit (VDDK), saying the SDK was licensed for backup and recovery—not for moving virtual machines to competing platforms. The kit remains available through selected technology alliance partners, but Broadcom customers do not automatically receive access.

Microsoft is planning a native Microsoft Teams backup and recovery feature that will let administrators restore teams and channels to a known-good state, with supported data retained for 30 days. The capability, listed under Microsoft 365 roadmap ID 570668, is scheduled to begin rolling out on Teams for the web in December 2026.
