You can now take long screenshots on Microsoft Edge Canary for Android

Par : Sean Endicott

The latest build of Edge Canary for Android supports taking long screenshots of websites.

What you need to know

  • Microsoft Edge Canary for Android now lets you take long screenshots of websites.
  • Chromium has supported this functionality for a while, but it is now in testing for the Edge browser.
  • The feature is in a controlled rollout, so you may not see it at this time.

Microsoft Edge Canary for Android can now take long screenshots of websites. Chromium has had the ability to take long screenshots for quite some time, but the option is now making its way to Microsoft's mobile browser. The feature was first spotted by Leo Varela, who shared screenshots and videos of it on Reddit.

Many smartphones have built-in functionality that allows them to take long screenshots, but the implementation can vary from phone to phone. By supporting long screenshots on the mobile version of Edge, Microsoft can bring the same UI across different devices.

A tweet from Varela shows the feature in action. When taking a screenshot, you can drag the bottom of the selection pane down to include more of a website. Edge then creates one long screenshot of your selection.

The feature is available in Microsoft Edge Canary Build 96.0.1050.0. As is the case with other experimental features in Edge, support for long screenshots is part of a controlled rollout. That means you may not see the option even if you're running the latest build of Microsoft Edge Canary on Android.

The Surface Laptop Go is back down to one of its lowest prices ever

Par : Sean Endicott

Best Buy and Microsoft have savings across the board for the Surface Laptop Go.

Microsoft's Surface Laptop Go is a budget-friendly laptop that brings Surface computing to a lower price point. The little laptop lacks some of the more premium features of the Surface Laptop 4 but left in what's important for a solid experience. It runs on a 10th Gen Intel Core i5 processor and has a bright display with good color accuracy.

The Surface Laptop Go is already one of the best Windows laptops, but its discounted price makes it even better. Right now, you can pick up the Surface Laptop Go from Best Buy or Microsoft for $550. That price will get you the model with 8GM of RAM and 128GB of storage. Normally, $550 will only get you half of that (4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage). Even the maxed-out version of the Surface Laptop Go with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage costs just $700.

Surface Laptop Go

From $550 at Best Buy From $550 at Microsoft

The Surface Laptop Go is a budget-friendly laptop that's easy to take on the go. Right now, you can pick up a midrange model for the same price as the entry model or go up to the highest-end version for just $700.

In his Surface Laptop Go review, our executive editor Daniel Rubino said, "After spending the last week with Microsoft's latest laptop, I am convinced Laptop Go is the perfect couch companion — or an ideal notebook for the classroom." He later added, "There's no way to say it other than Surface Laptop Go is a fun and lovely little laptop."

The idea behind the Surface Laptop Go is to get a solid core computing experience without breaking the bank. It has a good trackpad, design, and battery life. Even though its display is only 1536x1024, it's bright and color accurate. The laptop has some nice little touches as well, including a fingerprint reader and Omnisonic speakers. Note that to get the fingerprint reader, you have to buy a model with 8GB of RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of storage.

The Surface Laptop Go is a good device for students or people who need an affordable PC that's easy to carry around. The high-end model adds quite a bit compared to the more affordable option, and right now, you can pick up the best Surface Laptop Go for $700.

You can move the Windows 11 Taskbar to the top of your screen with this app

Par : Sean Endicott

A free app addresses one of the most frustrating things about Windows 11's Taskbar.

What you need to know

  • A free app called Taskbar11 allows you to move the Windows 11 Taskbar to the top of your screen.
  • Windows 11 does not have the option to move the Taskbar by default.
  • Several developers have created apps to allow people to customize the Windows 11 Taskbar.

Windows 11 lacks the option to move the Taskbar to the top of the screen. This omission has caused frustration among many Windows users, especially those that moved the Taskbar in previous versions of Windows. A new app called Taskbar11 allows you to place the Taskbar at the top of your screen when running Windows 11. The app is free and available on GitHub.

In addition to allowing people to move the Taskbar to the top of their screen, the app can customize some Taskbar settings. Many of these can also be customized directly through Windows 11 but adding options within Taskbar 11 allows people to control more aspects of the Taskbar from one place.

Taskbar11 can resize Taskbar icons, move the Taskbar, and enable or disable elements such as Search. Here are the features added in its most recent release:

  • Select taskbar alignment (left or centered).
  • Enable / disable taskbar icons
  1. Search
  2. Task View
  3. Widgets
  4. Chat
  • Enable / disable taskbar corner icons
  1. Pen
  2. Touch Keyboard
  3. Virtual Keyboard
  • Adjust taskbar behaviour
  1. Auto hide

There are other apps that allow you to customize the look of Windows 11, but some of them cost money. Taskbar11 is a free app that allows you to move the Taskbar.

I don’t hate the MacBook Pro’s notch, but I don’t want to see it on Windows

Par : Sean Endicott

The memes are funny, but I don't hate the notch on the new MacBook Pro.

Apple announced the new MacBook Pro yesterday. Inside, the laptop will run powerful processors that some Windows users are envious of, but on the outside, the MacBook Pro has a notch that's drawn criticism and jokes. While I agree that at first glance the notch on the MacBook Pro looks silly, it doesn't really eat up space that you'd otherwise have. In fact, it actually gives you more screen real estate in some cases.

Windows 11 and macOS are also different enough that a notch can work better on one than the other. While I hope that Windows laptops remain notchless, I think the notch works fine on macOS.

Comparing apples to apples

Many of the best Windows laptops manage to have thin bezels and cameras without requiring a notch. Our Richard Devine highlights that many laptops running Windows fit cameras that support facial recognition into bezels that are skinny. That is true, but some of those bezels are thicker than what's seen on the new MacBook Pro.

I'll have to break out a caliper to measure notches, but the Dell XPS 13 and Razer Book 13 have incredibly thin bezels that house cameras.

In contrast, the Surface Laptop 4, Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano, and Surface Pro X have slightly thicker top bezels. If they ran macOS, some of these laptops would gain a bit in the display department.

2021 MacBook Pro 16 vs. 2020 MacBook Pro 16

More importantly for people who buy MacBooks, the new MacBook Pro has a thinner top bezel than the model from 2020. Sure, you could criticize the 2020 MacBook Pro for having a chunky top bezel, but Apple addressed that with the 2021 MacBook Pro. Some people just don't like how Apple fixed it.

Windows vs. macOS

Of course, the best Windows laptops don't run macOS (duh). That's a key distinction, as macOS handles the top of its display differently. When navigating around the desktop on macOS or using apps that aren't in fullscreen mode, the operating system has a menu bar at the top of the screen. Unless you have a ton of menu bar icons, the notch isn't going to get in the way.

As pointed out by our sister site iMore, Apple's new MacBook Pro can use the full screen around its notch. The menu bar will wrap around the notch and bump up everything else a few millimeters. It's a bit like if a camera notch sat in an unused part of the Windows Taskbar. Microsoft won't let us move the Taskbar to the top of Windows 11, so maybe that point is moot.

I still think the notch looks ridiculous, but there's an argument to be made that getting more space on your screen is worth it. Moving the menu bar up means you have more room for your apps.

Missing FaceID

There are arguments to defend the notch, but its lack of FaceID is indefensible. The camera is just so ... prominent. It's just odd that a piece of hardware that stares at you in the face can't look at you with an IR camera to unlock the MacBook Pro. Not having Center Stage is also a frustrating omission. If Apple is repurposing R&D efforts from its other devices to make the MacBook Pro camera better, why aren't the best features from other Apple cameras in the laptop?

Apple moves at its own pace. It doesn't roll out tech until the company feels it's ready, but I think people would swallow the notch more if it added functionality.

Would you buy a Windows laptop with a notch?

Microsoft launches 'Happy Halo-ween' merchandise on the Xbox Gear Shop

Par : Sean Endicott

The Xbox Gear Shop has new merchandise for the spookiest time of the year.

What you need to know

  • Microsoft recently launched a "Happy Halo-ween" lineup of merchandise.
  • The Xbox Gear Shop features mugs, bags, t-shirts, and prints to celebrate the holiday.
  • New Xbox console pins and several other items recently arrived in the store as well.

To celebrate the spookiest time of the year, the Xbox Gear Shop has Halloween-themed Halo merchandise. The store has t-shirts, mugs, bags, and prints featuring Master Chief and the text "Happy Halo-ween." The website also has falling leaves to get you into the autumn mood (which you can disable to make shopping easier).

While Halloween is only a big deal in some communities on Earth, Microsoft claims that Halo-ween is a galactic holiday:

Halloween is a regional holiday celebrated on just parts of Earth. Halo-ween, on the other hand, is celebrated throughout the galaxy and we have truly official merchandise for the fictional occasion.

We're not sure how Master Chief would celebrate Halo-ween. Perhaps he scares trick-or-treaters by telling them about game delays and how Halo Infinite won't have a co-op campaign or Forge at launch.

If you like Master Chief but prefer something less spooky, Microsoft just launched a Halo Infinite Chief Helmet Profile t-shirt.

The Xbox Gear Shop also gained new console pins, new Gears of War merch, and several other new items. It also has new hats, hoodies, and other pieces of gear to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Xbox. It's updated rather often, so it's worth checking in every once in a while if you're on the hunt for new Xbox gear.

The Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard is down to just $30

Par : Sean Endicott

The Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard was already affordable, but it's now 50% off.

Microsoft has a long history of making ergonomic keyboards. Dating all the way back to 1994, Microsoft has released keyboards like the Sculpt Ergonomic, Surface Ergonomic, and the Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. The Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard follows in those footsteps and is down to one of its lowest prices ever. Right now, you can purchase the Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard for just $30, which is half off of its normal price.

The Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard was our pick as the best ergonomic keyboard before its price drop. It has deep key travel and large keys to provide a comfortable typing experience. Its keys are designed to bounce back, lessening the effort needed to type.

Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard

$30 at Microsoft

This ergonomic keyboard delivered an excellent value at its normal price. Right now, it's 50% off through Microsoft.

Our executive editor Daniel Rubino has used several ergonomic keyboards from Microsoft and gave this one a 4.5/5 in his Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard review. It earned high marks for its improved layout, larger keys, and consistent key travel. Rubino also praised the keyboard for its price, and that was back when it cost $60.

"Microsoft's Ergonomic Keyboard for 2019 is an excellent follow-up to the legendary Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000," said Rubino. "With larger keys, better key actuation, fixed spacebar, and now dedicated keys for the Windows 10 emoji picker, Office, and Windows snipping tool, it's also the most useful."

The biggest drawback of the Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard is that it lacks backlighting. Many would excuse this due to the keyboard's low price tag, but it's a noteworthy omission.

While the Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard is an excellent option, it isn't the only ergonomic keyboard on the market. In fact, Microsoft makes three of the best ergonomic keyboards you can buy. They're all a bit different when it comes to design, so you may prefer one over the other. Logitech, Razer, and Kinesis also make solid ergonomic keyboards that are featured in our roundup.

Surface Duo 2 is the most anticipated gadget among our readers in Techtober

Par : Sean Endicott

The Surface Duo 2 continues to be the ̶a̶p̶p̶l̶e̶ Surface of our readers' eyes.

What you need to know

  • Google, Microsoft, Apple, and other major companies have new gadgets coming out in October 2021, which has been called "Techtober."
  • The iPhone 13, Pixel 6, and new Surface hardware are among the newly announced devices.
  • Windows Central readers are overwhelmingly most excited about the Surface Duo 2.

October is always a big month for gadget geeks, and that's especially the case with October 2021. Apple, Google, Microsoft, and other tech giants have new gadgets to show off this month. Many in the industry now refer to October as "Techtober" due to the number of announcements each year. Over the weekend, we ran a poll asking which gadget drew the most excitement from our readers. In a poll full of options from the biggest names in tech, the Surface Duo 2 won in a landslide.

Over 58% of polled Windows Central readers said that they were most excited about the Surface Duo 2. That was more than five times the interest the Pixel 6 drew. Only 2.6% of voters said that they were most interested in the iPhone 13. The MacBook Pro, which should be announced on October 18, 2021, only earned 2% of the votes.

As Windows Central has a readership with many Microsoft and Surface enthusiasts, it's not surprising that the Surface Duo 2 garnered the most attention. What is a bit surprising is the margin by which the Surface Duo 2 beat out every other device. Microsoft's Surface Laptop Studio (6.9%), Surface Pro 8 (6.4%), and Surface Go 3 (2%) didn't come close to their foldable Surface sibling.

The Microsoft-made device that drew the second most interest was the Xbox Mini Fridge (9.6%).

  • A refreshed MacBook Pro with an M1X chip is expected at the event.
  • Our sister site iMore will cover everything announced at Apple Unleashed.

Apple Unleashed kicks off today, October 18, 2021, at 10 AM PDT (1 PM EDT). At the event, Apple is expected to announce a refreshed MacBook Pro running on an M1X chip. Our sister site iMore will cover everything during the event, including the unveiling of what will likely become the best Mac in 2021.

You can watch the event on Apple's website or check it out through the Apple TV app. It will also be broadcast on YouTube, which may be easier to watch for people who don't have Apple hardware.

It's expected that Apple will show off a second-generation 16-inch MacBook Pro and a new 14-inch model. Both devices should run Apple's new M1X chip that's built on A14/M1 architecture. Experts don't expect the new MacBook Pro to run on a chip based on the A15 architecture seen in the iPhone 13.

The new MacBook Pro is said to take design cues from the iPad Pro, including a flatter design. The laptop is also expected to ditch the Touch Bar. Its new design is expected to feature several ports, including an HDMI port, an SD card slot, and the return of MagSafe. The suspected port selection of the MacBook Pro is a big deal because the current generation MacBook Pro only features USB-C ports.

The folks over at iMore will cover everything announced at Apple Unleashed 2021, including if Apple surprises people with a new Mac mini. You can expect extensive coverage of the new MacBook Pro from iMore as well, including a closer look once the device becomes available.

Fix for AMD performance bug on Windows 11 in testing with Insiders

Par : Sean Endicott

Microsoft appears close to fixing the L3 caching issue affecting Windows 11 PCs with AMD Ryzen processors.

What you need to know

  • The latest Insider build of Windows 11 addresses performance issues affecting AMD processors running Windows 11.
  • Some AMD chips see a performance drop of 3-5% when running Windows 11 due to an L3 caching issue.
  • The fix rolled out to Insiders in the Release Preview and Beta Channels on October 15, 2021.

Microsoft released Windows 11 Build 22000.282 to Insiders in the Release Preview and Beta Channels on October 15, 2021. That update includes a fix for an L3 caching issue that can affect the performance of Windows 11 PCs with AMD CPUs. The bug can cause performance drops of up to 5% on affected systems. An earlier report indicates that a fix for the L3 caching issue could roll out to general users on October 19, 2021.

"We fixed an L3 caching issue that might affect performance in some applications on devices that have AMD Ryzen processors after upgrading to Windows 11 (original release)," says Microsoft in the release notes of Build 22000.282.

Microsoft's release notes only specifically mention AMD's Ryzen processors. Some other CPUs from AMD officially support Windows 11, including a handful of Threadripper chips, but it appears that the L3 caching issue only affects Ryzen chips.

A fix for a separate issue affecting Windows 11 systems with AMD CPUs could roll out later this week. The bug is related to AMD's preferred core technology, which shifts threads to the fastest core on a processor. It can cause performance drops of 10-15%. A cumulative update to Windows 11 reportedly made the issue worse. The fix for that problem is expected in a patch from AMD on October 21, 2021.

What do you want to see in our Surface Duo 2 coverage?

Par : Sean Endicott

We're open to requests with Surface Duo 2 coverage.

Microsoft's Surface Duo 2 starts shipping on October 22, 2021. The foldable looks to be a significant upgrade over the original Surface Duo, so there will be plenty of things to test out after its release.

Our senior Windows Editor Zac Bowden pre-ordered his Surface Duo 2 a few weeks ago, putting his money where his mouth is (he also bought Surface Duo 1 last year). He has just been charged by Microsoft, meaning it should be in his hands this Thursday, October 21, when it goes on sale. He's in for the black 128GB model and is already gearing up for an unboxing video when it arrives next week (assuming deliveries hit that Thursday).

When he gets the gadget, he'll run through its specs, design, performance, and other core aspects, but with a device as different as the Surface Duo 2, there are bound to be unique angles worth investigating. A niche piece of hardware calls for special attention, which is where you come in — please let us know in the comments anything specific you'd like to see regarding the Surface Duo 2.

Hardware

The Surface Duo 2 has much more powerful specs than its predecessor. Its Snapdragon 888 processor is the same CPU seen in many flagship phones, which should result in dramatically better performance. Are you ever held back by the hardware of the original Surface Duo? Are there combinations of apps you'd like us to try once we have the device in hand?

Moving to the back of the foldable, the triple-camera system of the Surface Duo 2 should be much better than the camera of the original Surface Duo, but judging a camera based solely on its specs is never a great idea. Which scenarios are you most concerned about when it comes to the Surface Duo 2's camera?

Software

Arguably the biggest downfall of the original Surface Duo was its software. Strange bugs plagued it at launch and several linger to this day. Some issues only affect certain devices. Other problems are bound to specific situations that most people won't stumble upon. Are there any bugs from the original Surface Duo you're concerned might crop up on the Duo 2?

Comparisons

Since the Surface Duo 2 is unique, it can be difficult to judge against popular hardware. Are there specific phones or tablets that you'd like to see the Surface Duo 2 stacked up against?

Many people won't be able to compare a Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2 side by side. However, once we have the Duo 2 in hand, we'll be able to compare things down to the pixel. Do you want to know how the middle gaps between the devices compare? Perhaps you're curious about how different apps might look on the two devices. For example, some have complained that the bar in the middle of the original Surface Duo cuts content in certain apps. If you're affected by that issue, you may want to see if it sticks around with the Duo 2.

Great expectations

When Microsoft announced all its new Surface hardware, the Duo 2 drew the most interest from our readers. Compared to its predecessor, the spec sheet is better, and the design looks more refined. Now, it's time to see if the Duo 2 meets expectations.

Dell discounts XPS 13 with Windows 10, debunks Windows 11 tax theories

Par : Sean Endicott

You could save some cash by ordering an older Dell laptop with Windows 10.

What you need to know

  • A recent report sparked speculation about a "Windows 11 tax" on some Dell PCs.
  • Dell has since clarified that it is not charging more to ship Windows 11 but is instead discounting devices with Windows 10.
  • People can purchase the discounted device with Windows 10 and then upgrade it to Windows 11 if they want to.

Windows 10 could be the secret to getting one of the best Windows laptops for a discount. Since manufacturers want to get rid of older stock, some older PCs with Windows 10 are on sale compared to their Windows 11 counterparts.

TechRadar recently reported that certain Dell devices with Windows 11 were more expensive than the same hardware running Windows 10, suggesting a "Windows 11 tax." Initial reporting was presumptive, as Dell later confirmed that the price difference was due to older hardware with Windows 10 being discounted:

The starting price of the equally configured Windows 10 vs 11 XPS 13 laptops are the same, but we have applied a larger discount on the Windows 10 version of this particular XPS 13 model to clear out inventory. Keep in mind, Windows 11 is still a free upgrade on the Windows 10 model.

Dell's statement confirms that while the company is not charging a fee for devices to ship with Windows 11, there is a way to get older devices for a discount. Dell wants to clear out inventory of older machines with Microsoft's older operating system. As a result, some laptops and PCs could be further discounted if they're running Windows 10.

An older model of the XPS 13 sparked speculation of the now-debunked Windows 11 tax. The Windows 11 version of the XPS 13 with an Intel Core i5-1135G7 processor costs $882. The same model with Windows 10 costs $735. That price difference comes from the version with Windows 10 being further discounted, not Windows 11 having a premium attached.

Note that this specific XPS 13 features an older design that sports a 16:9 aspect ratio alongside modern internals (11th Gen Intel Core i5 or i7). Our piece comparing the XPS 13 (9300) vs. XPS 13 (7390) can help you spot the design differences between the devices, but remember that Dell has since improved the internals of the 7390.

Because Windows 11 is a free upgrade, anyone can order the model with Windows 10 preinstalled and then upgrade it themselves, essentially saving almost $150 for being willing to perform an OS upgrade (or electing to stick with Windows 10).

While we've only seen this practice from Dell so far, there's a chance that other PC manufacturers could follow suit.

Dell XPS 13

From $735 at Dell

This Dell XPS 13 is a slightly older model when it comes to design, but it runs on 11th Gen Intel Core processors. You can get an even bigger discount if you order a model with Windows 10, which you can then manually upgrade to Windows 11 for free.

NAS deal alert: Western Digital’s Red Plus HDD down to just $210

Par : Sean Endicott

Best Buy's latest deal makes the Western Digital Red Plus an even better value.

The Western Digital Red Plus NAS drive is on sale for $210 right now from Best Buy. That price is for the 10TB model, which normally costs $320. The 4TB ($98), 6TB ($145), 12TB ($325), and 14TB ($410) are also on sale. Western Digital has been in the storage industry for years, and it makes several of the best storage drives for NAS. The WD Red Plus

The Western Digital Red Plus is on our list of the best and most reliable hard drives for Synology NAS. Note that the WD Red Plus will work with NAS from other companies, including TerraMaster, QNAP, and other brands. It's a reliable hard drive that delivers a lot of storage for its price. With its current discount, it delivers an even better value.

10 TB Western Digital Red Plus

$210 at Best Buy $280 at Amazon

The WD Red Plus delivers an excellent value for its price. It's one of the best drives for your NAS.

The WD Red Plus isn't the fastest HDD you can purchase, but you can alleviate that some by using the drive in RAID formation. The drive comes with WD's NASware 3.0 for enhanced reliability and performance. It also offers vibration protection.

The HDD has a maximum data transfer rate of 215 MB/s. It hits that same figure for both read and write speeds. If you need a faster drive, our list of the best SSD for NAS includes several speedy SSDs.

The WD Red Plus normally delivers a good amount of storage for its price, but Best Buy's current discount sweetens the deal. The stated discount of $110 is a bit high, however. Amazon sells the same drive for $280. That means Best Buy's deal is still good, but not quite as much of a discount as stated.

Note that WD doesn't ship mounting brackets or screws with this drive, so you'll have to make sure to source your own.
