Le Sodium Vapor (ou vapeur de sodium en français) est une technique inventée par les petits génies de chez Disney dans les années 60, qui permet de faire des trucs assez dingues logiquement compliqués voire impossible devant un fond vert. Mary Poppins sorti en 1964 en est le parfait exemple.

Déjà, ça permet de filmer des éléments transparents comme de la fumée, un voile, de l’eau alors qu’avec un fond vert, c’est juste impossible ! Même porter des fringues vertes ou bleues devant, ça ne pose aucun problème.

Alors c’est quoi le secret ? Et bien il s’agit d’une lumière jaune très spécifique, obtenue grâce à des lampes à vapeur de sodium. Ça éclaire le fond dans une longueur d’onde unique à 589 nm. Et grâce à un prisme et des filtres, on peut séparer ainsi cette longueur d’onde du reste de l’image pour obtenir un cache alpha parfait !

Bon OK, ça demande un matos un peu spécial… Les ingés de Disney ont dû créer un prisme sur-mesure qui a coûté un bras. Du coup, ils n’en ont fabriqué que 3 exemplaires et aujourd’hui, ces petites merveilles ont malheureusement complètement disparu !

C’est là qu’intervient Corridor Crew et le chercheur Paul Debevec. Ce dernier a réussi à recréer un système de Sodium Vapor avec des composants modernes ! Bon, son installation a un petit côté « usine à gaz » avec des bouts de ficelle, mais ça marche ! Résultat des courses : il est possible d’utiliser à nouveau cette technique, tombée dans l’oubli pendant des décennies et les effets visuels obtenus sont d’une fluidité et d’un réalisme hallucinants.

Cela ouvre à nouveau pas mal de possibilités pour les réalisateurs et pro des effets spéciaux : Aliens translucides qui flottent dans les airs, fantômes aux contours parfaits, tenues irisées qui changent de couleur…

Alors OK, ça ne va pas remplacer totalement le fond vert et les . Les murs de type volumes LED ont aussi leurs avantages, mais ça fait plaisir de voir que l’innovation ne s’arrête jamais, même en déterrant des techniques préhistoriques !

Bref, la prochaine fois que vous verrez un plan qui vous en mettra plein les mirettes, regardez bien s’il n’y a pas un petit goût de vapeur de sodium… C’est peut-être le retour d’un grand classique !
